Event

Former Dominican Consul General to the Dominican Republic Edwin Paraison clarified on Thursday, September 19, that the Dominican Republic is not closing its border with Haiti, despite media misinterpretations. A clarification was issued shortly thereafter stating that heightened security measures would be implemented to significantly reinforce the border. Travel may be restricted, though the border remains open. The decision comes as what a Dominican minister describes as an "explosive situation" in Haiti.

A heightened security presence, increased checkpoints, transportation delays, and processing delays at the border is to be expected.

Advice

Individuals in Dominican Republic are advised to anticipate a heavier than usual security presence, adhere to instructions issued by local authorities, and minimize movement at or near land borders when possible.
