Police forces fired tear gas and stun grenades to forcibly disperse a rally in Baghdad on Tuesday, October 1, after protesters attempted to cross over the Al Jumariyah Bridge into the Green Zone. Around 1000 people gathered in Tahrir Square to denounce the government's perceived inefficiency and corruption, as well as lack of employment opportunities in the country. Local media reports indicate that at least one person was killed by small arms fire and 50 others were wounded. A building housing security forces was reportedly set on fire.
A heightened security presence and localized traffic disruptions are to be expected in the affected area over the coming hours.
Individuals in Iraq are advised to closely monitor the situation, avoid all protests and large public gatherings as a precaution, and adhere to all instructions issued by the local authorities.
The security environment in Iraq remains complex. Although travel is possible in some areas with proper security protocols in place, other areas should be considered strictly off limits. Professional security advice and support should be sought prior to all travel.
