Nigeria Alerte de sécurité

Tensions high in Kano as of October 2 amid Court judgement over the victory of the governor following latest gubernatorial elections; avoid all gatherings

TIMEFRAME expected from 2/10/2019, 12h00 until 3/10/2019, 11h59 (Africa/Lagos). COUNTRY/REGION Kano

Tensions are high in the city of Kano as of Wednesday, October 2, as the Tribunal Court is expected to deliver its judgement over the victory of Governor Abdullahi Ganduje in the last gubernatorial elections, which took place on March 23. According to local sources, most businesses in the area are closed and a heavy security presence has been deployed across the city, notably around the Murtala Mohammad Way, Hadieja Road, Ahmadu Bello Road, State Road.

The judgement of the Tribunal Court may lead to clashes between supporters of the governor and those of its rival. A heightened security presence and localised transportation disruptions are to be expected in the coming hours.

Supplementary gubernatorial elections took place in six states, including Kano, on March 23, after initial elections on March 9 were declared inconclusive due to irregularities. The incumbent candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) party, Ganduje, was declared winner. The candidate of the opposition party, Peoples' Democratic Party (PDP), Abba Kabir Yusuff, had challenged the outcome of the election in court.

Individuals in Kano are advised to monitor the situation, avoid public political demonstrations due to the risk of violence, anticipate a heightened security presence and localized disruptions, and adhere to all instructions issued by local authorities and their home governments.

The security environment in Nigeria remains complex. Although travel is permissible in some areas, other areas should be considered strictly off limits. Professional security advice and support should be sought prior to travel.
