The area around the Paris police Prefecture, located on Quai de Gesvres, in the 4th arrondissement, has reportedly been put on lockdown with a heavy security presence and traffic restrictions reported following a knife attack within the police premise on Thursday, October 3. The nearby Cité metro station on line 4 has been closed until further notice.
The incident occurred at approximately 13:00 (local time), when a knife-wielding assailant, an employee at the prefecture, stabbed four police officers to death. The assailant has subsequently been killed. The premise is being evacuated.
The motive behind the attack remains unclear, though the dispute is believed to be of a personal nature.
A heightened security presence and localized transportation disruptions are to be expected in the area over the coming hours.
