Prime Minister Pravind Kumar Jugnauth announced on Sunday, October 6, that he had dissolved parliament and called for general elections for Thursday, November 7. The submission of candidate applications closes on Tuesday, October 22. Voters will elect 70 deputies for a five-year term.

Political demonstrations are possible throughout the country in the lead up to the elections. Heightened security measures and localized traffic disruptions are anticipated around all election-related events and polling stations.


Mauritius holds elections every five years, with the last one taking place in 2014. Prime Minister Jugnauth, leader of the Mouvement Socialiste Militant, took over from his father as prime minister in 2017.


Individuals in Mauritius are advised to monitor developments to the situation, avoid all demonstrations as a precaution, and adhere to all instructions issued by the local authorities.
