Recurring power outages have been reported in the capital Nouakchott from Tuesday, October 8, through Wednesday, October 9. According to SOMELEC, the national electric company, the blackouts were caused by a breakdown with the high-voltage line from the Manantali hydroelectric dam in Mali. According to media reports, large portions of Nouakchott were without power on the morning (local time) of Wednesday. SOMELEC technicians were deployed to repair the line on October 9; however, further power disruptions are possible in the coming days.
Individuals in Nouakchott are advised to monitor developments to the situation, conserve power on battery-operated devices, prepare for disruptions to transportation and business, and adhere to all instructions issued by the local authorities.
