Event

The religious group Shorbodoliyo Muslim Oikkya Parishad (SMOP) called for protests on Monday, October 21, across the Bhola district to start on Tuesday, October 22, despite a ban on rallies and meetings issued by local authorities.

Demonstrations have been called in front of all polices facilities across Bhola district on Tuesday. On Thursday, October 24, protesters are expected to form a human chain on Sadar Road. On Friday, October 25, a Duaa Mahfil will be held in front of the Atkhola Mosque.

Additional protests are possible in Bhola district over the near term. A heightened security presence and localized transportation disruptions are to be expected around any demonstration site. Clashes between protesters and security forces cannot be ruled out.

Context

At least four people were killed and another 50 wounded after clashes erupted between protesters and police in Bhola on October 20. Protesters had gathered to denounce a Facebook post in which a Hindu reportedly made derogatory remarks about the Prophet Mohammad. Officials said that hackers were responsible for the social media post, and that arrests had been made.

The religious group Shorbodoliyo Muslim Oikkya Parishad (SMOP) responded to the event by expressing six demands and called for protests to continue until they are met.

Advice

Individuals in Bhola are advised to monitor the situation, avoid all protests and public gatherings, anticipate transportation disruptions and a heightened security presence around the conference site, and adhere to instructions issued by local authorities.
