Tens of thousands of demonstrators reportedly participated in a rally at Liberty Square in Khartoum on Monday, October 21. Participants called for the dissolution of the National Congress Party, formerly led by President Omar al-Bashir, who was ousted in April. Protesters also demanded that Bashir-era officials be put on trial for alleged corruption. Police blocked off main streets Monday leading to the presidential palace and the military's headquarters in Khartoum ahead of the marches. Associated demonstrations were also held in Omdurman and Atbara.
Heightened security measures along with traffic disruptions are likely near all protest sites over the coming hours. Further protests are possible over the coming days and weeks.
Individuals in Khartoum are advised to monitor developments to the situation, avoid all protests and demonstrations as a precaution, anticipate localized transportation disruptions, and adhere to instructions issued by local authorities.
