The Pacific Gas & Electric (PG&E) utility company in California state warned on Monday, October 21, that further power cuts are possible starting Wednesday, October 23, due to an increasing threat of wildfires. According to PG&E, around 209,000 homes in 17 counties in northern and central California may be affected by the blackout. Strong, dry winds are forecast to hit the Northern Sierra, Sacramento Valley, and North Bay from Wednesday, through Thursday, October 24. Up-to-date information on the potential power cuts can be found on the company website here.
Associated business and transportation disruptions are possible if the blackouts come into effect.
Similar power outages occurred between October 9-11, impacting an estimated 1.5 million people in northern and central California.
Individuals in the affected areas are advised to monitor the situation, keep battery-operated devices fully charged whenever possible, and to be cautious when driving or crossing streets if traffic signals are not functioning.
