On Sunday, October 27, the Progressive Congress Coalition (PCC) called for protests to take place in Malé on Monday, October 28, to demand the ban of the Maldivian Democracy Network (MDN) NGO. Protesters are expected to gather at 20:30 (local time) in front of the party's headquarters, located on the capital's outer ring road.
In a statement issued on Saturday, October 26, the PCC warned the ruling Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) of further disruptive protests. Police cautioned that suppressive action would be taken against all unlawful gatherings.
Associated localized transportation disruptions and a heightened security presence are expected in the vicinity of all protests. Further demonstrations are expected in the coming days and can take place with little notice. Clashes between security forces and protesters cannot be ruled out.
In October 2019, religious scholars have launched a nationwide campaign to ban the MDN following the publication of a report in 2016, allegedly offending Islam.
Marches and rallies, supported by the opposition Progressive Congress Coalition (PCC) party have been held with little notice in Maamigili, Thulushdoo, Himmafushi, and Male since early October to demand the ban of the MDN and the resignation of representatives linked to the NGO.
Individuals in the Maldives are advised to monitor the situation for potential gatherings and protests, avoid all public demonstrations as a precaution, anticipate localized disruptions and a heightened security presence near demonstrations, and adhere to instructions issued by local authorities.
