Several civil society groups are planning a rally in the capital Dakar on Saturday, November 2, in support of the National Front for the Defense of the Constitution (FNDC) opposition coalition in Guinea. According to media reports, the demonstration will begin at 16:00 (local time) at the Place de la Nation. The organizers are denouncing Guinean President Alpha Condé’s perceived intentions to run for a third term in 2020. They claim that if he runs, it will destabilize the country and in turn affect Senegal.
A heightened security presence and localized traffic disruptions are anticipated around rally sites.
The FNDC has been organizing protests in Guinea since September 21. Opposition members allege that President Alpha Condé, who has been in power since 2010, is positioning himself to change the constitution to then run for a third presidential term in late 2020. Condé has now publicly called for constitutional change regarding presidential term limits.
Individuals in Dakar are advised to monitor developments to the situation, avoid all protests and demonstrations as a precaution, and obey all instructions issued by the local authorities.
