Thailan: Insurgents assault checkpoint in Yala province November 5

Thailand Alerte de sécurité

Suspected separatist fighters assault a checkpoint in Yala province on November 5, killing at least 15 people; further attacks possible in the near term

TIMEFRAME expected from 5/11/2019, 12h00 until 12/11/2019, 11h59 (Asia/Bangkok). COUNTRY/REGION Yala province, Mueang Yala district (Yala province)

Thai military officials confirmed on Wednesday, November 6, that suspected separatist militants assaulted a security checkpoint in Yala province the previous night. According to media reports, the attack occurred at around 23:15 (local time) on Tuesday, November 5, in the Lam Phaya area of Mueang Yala district. At least 15 people were killed and another four wounded in the attack. According to officials, the attackers used explosives and put debris on the roads to delay responding security forces.

A heightened security presence and an increase in operations to find the attackers is expected in the area. Similar militant operations are possible in Yala province over the near term.

An ethnic and religious separatist insurgency is ongoing in the provinces of Songkhla, Pattani, Narathiwat, and Yala, which make up the historical Malay Patani region in the extreme south of the country along the Thai-Malaysian border. Since 2001, over 7000 people have been killed (e.g. local residents, civil servants, security personnel, militants) and many more wounded in near-daily clashes and assassinations.

Individuals in Yala province are advised to monitor developments to the situation, remain vigilant for militant and criminal activity, expect heightened security measures, and adhere to all instructions issued by the local authorities and their home governments.

As a reminder, some Western governments advise against nonessential travel to Pattani, Yala, Narathiwat, and the south of Songkhla. Individuals in these areas should remain cautious and adhere to any instructions issued by the local authorities.
