India Alerte de sécurité

Unhealthy air quality levels reported in Uttar Pradesh and Bihar states November 6; situation to improve in the coming days

TIMEFRAME expected from 6/11/2019, 12h00 until 8/11/2019, 11h59 (Asia/Kuala_Lumpur). COUNTRY/REGION Patna, Kanpur, Lucknow

As of Tuesday, November 5, hazardous air quality levels were recorded across the states of Uttar Pradesh and Bihar. The Air Quality Index (AQI) reached 453 in Kanpur (Uttar Pradesh), 416 in Lucknow (Uttar Pradesh), and 414 in Patna (Bihar) at around 16:00 (local time). Despite an improvement in air quality on Wednesday, November 6, AQI reading were ranging from unhealthy to hazardous levels, reaching 195 in Kanpur, 284 in Lucknow, and 180 in Patna at around 18:00.

According to the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB), very poor air quality levels have been caused by strong northwesterly winds dispersing the pollution accumulated in Delhi and northern India towards eastern India and the Bay of Bengal. The situation is expected to improve over the coming days.

An AQI reading of 0-50 is considered good, 51-100 moderate, and 101-200+ unhealthy.

Health officials on Friday, November 1, declared a public health emergency due to the "Severe+" level of air pollution in New Delhi and the National Capital Region (NCR).

Individuals presents in Lucknow, Kanpur and Patna are advised to monitor the situation, limit outdoor activities until the situation normalizes, and wear N95 rated masks as a protection. Children and those with chronic respiratory illnesses should exercise increased caution. Individuals are advised to seek medical attention if experiencing breathing difficulties or other health concerns.
