Transportation disruptions are expected in the greater Valparaíso area on Tuesday, November 12, due to a planned general strike. The Coordinator of Regional Metro Unions of Valparaíso (Merval) announced that there will be no metro rail service on Tuesday as workers will join the nationwide strike action. According to media reports, minibuses will offer limited public transportation services but may have to suspend operations depending on security conditions. Associated demonstrations may also be held in the city.
Nationwide protests have been ongoing in Chile since October 6, after the government announced an increase in metro and bus fares. Union leaders have accused the government of “systematic violations of their fundamental rights in matters of health, education, and pensions.”
Individuals in Valparaíso are advised to keep abreast of the situation, avoid all protests due to the risk of violence, prepare for disruptions to transportation and business, and adhere to any instructions issued by the local authorities.
