Venice is experiencing a new high tide on Friday, November 15, due to record flooding which prompted the declaration of a state of emergency in the city. At 12:00 (local time), the mayor of Venice ordered the closure of Piazza Saint Marco to avoid any and all health risks. The peak reached 1.5 meters (3.3 ft) at that time. Though many businesses were hoping to reopen by Friday, conditions worsened and are expected to remain closed today, and potentially into the weekend.

Heavy flooding and rainfall and associated disruptions have been reported throughout the Veneto region. Officials stated on Wednesday that a man died after being electrocuted while pumping water out of his house on the island of Pellestrina.

Further heavy rainfall and flooding are expected in Venice and across the Veneto region over the coming days. Transportation and business disruptions are expected to continue.

Individuals in Venice are advised to monitor local weather reports, adhere to instructions issued by local authorities, confirm road conditions before setting out, and anticipate disruptions to transportation and business in flood-affected areas. Remember that running water can be dangerous - 15 cm (6 in) is enough to knock over an adult - and never drive through flooded streets; floodwater may also contain wastewater and chemical products.
