Afghanistan: Taliban ambush leaves four dead in Takhar province November 15

Afghanistan Alerte de sécurité

Taliban ambush leaves police chief and three others dead in Takhar province November 15; similar attacks possible over the near term

TIMEFRAME expected from 15/11/2019, 12h00 until 16/11/2019, 11h59 (Asia/Kabul). COUNTRY/REGION Takhar province

Event

Taliban militants launched an attack on the Takhar-Baghlan highway (Takhar province) on the morning (local time) of Friday, November 15, killing Warsaj district's police chief and three of his bodyguards. According to local officials, the police chief was traveling to Kabul province. The Taliban has claimed responsibility for the attack.

A heightened security presence and associated transportation disruptions are expected in the area over the coming hours.

Context

Taliban militants launch attacks on government personnel, security forces, and civilians in Afghanistan on a near-daily basis. Such assaults are, in part, intended to undermine the perceived capacity of Afghan National Security Forces (ANSF) - and the Afghan government more broadly - to adequately provide security in the wake of the withdrawal of most US-led NATO forces from the country and to gain leverage amid ongoing peace negotiations.

Advice

Individuals in Takhar province are advised to monitor developments, remain vigilant for militant activity, and adhere to all instructions issued by the local authorities and their home governments.

The security environment in Afghanistan remains complex. Although travel is possible in some areas, other areas should be considered strictly off-limits. Professional security advice and support should be sought prior to travel.
