The Finnish Aviation Union announced on Monday, November 18, that ground staff plan to hold a 24-hour strike on Monday, November 25, in solidarity with striking postal workers. According to union leaders, the work stoppage will affect ground services, including catering, technical services, cargo, and security checks. Associated disruptions, including flight delays or cancelations, are expected at airports throughout the country. A spokesperson for national carrier Finnair warned that the strike will have major impacts on air traffic and said the company is still estimating how it will affect their operations.

Multiple employee unions in Finland have announced measures to support some 9000 postal workers who have been on strike since Monday, November 11. The Transport Workers’ Union AKT launched a sympathy strike on November 18, with members suspending support for activities by the state-own postal company Posti. Members of the Finnish Seamen’s Union also launched a strike on Monday which is expected to stall Finnish flagged ships at ports nationwide. The Railway Union (RAU) announced it will suspend freight traffic on November 18-19 but said the action will not affect passenger train service.

Associated transportation and mail delivery disruptions are anticipated for the duration of the postal worker strike.


The Post and Logistics Union (PAU) launched a strike on November 11 after negotiations broke down with Posti on a new collective bargaining agreement. PAU members said they will strike until Sunday, December 8, if a deal is not reached.


Individuals in Finland are advised to keep abreast of the situation and anticipate transportation and mail delivery disruptions.

Travelers flying to or from Finland on November 25 are advised to confirm flight reservations before heading to the airport and to contact their airline for additional information.
