A total of 116 municipalities across nine coastal states have endured the results of an oil spill for which operations are still underway as of Monday, November 18. Two ships have been accused of spilling oil, which has washed up to shore.
The Navy arranged 5,000 military personnel, 37 ships, and 11 aircraft to clean the affected areas, as part of the operation of the Navy, the Army, and the Chico Mendes Institute for the Conservation of Biodiversity (ICMbio) to prevent the oil from reaching the Parnaíba River.
Some coastal areas have been closed to the public for cleaning and rescue operations.
The oil spill was first reported in August and is still affecting the areas into November.
Individuals should avoid the area of the spill and follow all instructions issued by authorities.
