Event
An estimated 207,000 people participated in nationwide opposition protests and a general strike on Thursday, November 21. Heightened security measures were undertaken in advance of the protests, with 170,000 police officers deployed across the country to enforce security. Border crossings were also closed on Thursday. Clashes were reported in Bogota after some protesters blocked roads and vandalized buses. Riot police reportedly fired tear gas in several locales of the capital to disperse protesters.
Confrontations between protesters and security forces were also reported in Cali. A curfew has been imposed in the city from 19:00 (local time) on Thursday until 06:00 on Friday, November 22.
Additional demonstrations are possible over the coming days. A heightened security presence and associated transportation disruptions are to be expected in the vicinity of all protests. Clashes between security forces and protesers cannot be ruled out.
