India Alerte de sécurité

Communist Party of India (CPI)-Maoists to observe Martyr’s Week on December 2-8; heightened security presence and militant attacks likely

TIMEFRAME expected from 29/11/2019, 12h00 until 30/11/2019, 11h59 (Asia/Kolkata). COUNTRY/REGION Chhattisgarh, Telangana state, India, Maharashtra, Odisha state, Jharkhand state

Event

Leaders of the Communist Party of India (CPI)-Maoists, or Naxalites, will observe Martyr's Week from Monday, December 2, through Sunday December 8. Associated events are likely to take place in Naxalite areas in Chhattisgarh, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra, Odisha, and Jharkhand.

According to authorities, militant activity is likely in the Gondia, Chandrapur, and Gadchiroli districts, and road blockades have been reported in Gadchiroli district on Friday, November 29.

Further disruptions and militant actions activity is likely over the coming days, weeks, and a heightened security presence have been reported.

Context

Naxalites hold Martyr's Week events every year to memorialize fighters who were killed fighting government forces. An estimated 6000 people have died in the past 20 years, though activities have decreased recently due, in part, to a security crackdown. Restrictions on the movement of foreigners are in place for some rural areas of eastern India, including parts of Chhattisgarh.

Advice

Individuals in India are advised to monitor developments to the situation, anticipate a heightened security presence, adhere to all instructions issued by local authorities (e.g. travel restrictions) and their home governments, and remain vigilant for militant activity, particularly if traveling to rural areas.
