Angola: Protest planned in Cabinda December 10

Angola Alerte de sécurité

Separatists plan protest march in Cabinda province on December 10; heightened security presence and localized transportation disruptions expected

TIMEFRAME expected from 10/12/2019, 12h00 until 10/12/2019, 11h59 (Africa/Luanda). COUNTRY/REGION Cabinda

Event

The Cabinda Independence Movement (MIC) has called for a protest in Cabinda on Tuesday, December 10, to demand a referendum for the province's independence. Protesters plan to gather at 11:30 (local time) at the Zangoio Cemetery (Parada dos Fieis), and later proceed to the Angolan Government Headquarters.

A heightened security presence and localized transportation disruptions are to be expected along the march route.

Context

Cabinda is geographically separated from the rest of Angola by a small section of the DRC and shares a border with the Republic of Congo. Various separatist groups, including the Front for the Liberation of the State of Cabinda (FLEC), were formed in the early 1960s and have since been fighting a low-intensity war, first with Portuguese colonists and later the Angolan state, for the independence of the Cabinda province.

Advice

Individuals in Cabinda are advised to monitor developments, avoid all protests and demonstrations as a precaution, anticipate a heightened security presence and localized transportation disruptions, and adhere to all instructions issued by local authorities.
