As of Friday, January 10, at least 53 cases of Influenza A have been reported in Penang and 23 others in Selangor, prompting school closures in Penang and the Klang Valley.

Further spread of the virus is possible in the coming weeks and months.


Influenza is a contagious virus that can spread from human to human. Symptoms include high fever, aching muscles, headache, and respiratory issues. Particularly vulnerable individuals include young children, the elderly, pregnant women, the obese, and individuals suffering from chronic diseases. An annual vaccine is available.


Individuals in Malaysia, especially in Penang and Selangor, are advised to confirm their vaccination status, take preventative measures to minimize the risk of contraction (e.g. wash hands thoroughly, avoid contact with sick individuals, etc.), and consult medical professionals if exhibiting flu-like symptoms.
