Alejandro Giammattei is scheduled to be inaugurated as President of Guatemala on Tuesday, January 14. Giammattei announced on Monday, January 13, that he has increased security measures around the ceremony due to death threats on his life. The ceremony is scheduled to start at 14:00 (local time) at the Teatro Nacional in Guatemala City. US diplomatic sources have warned of large crowds, traffic, and potential protests and urges individuals to avoid Zone 1, hotels in Zone 10, and La Aurora International Airport (GUA) on Tuesday through Wednesday, January 15.

A heightened security presence, localized transportation disruptions, and demonstrations are anticipated in Guatemala City on Tuesday.


Individuals in Guatemala, and in Guatemala City in particular, are advised to avoid all political events as a precaution, allow additional time to travel, and adhere to all instructions issued by local authorities and their home governments.
