According to local officials, at least 12 people were killed in Bukavu (South Kivu province) by floods and landslides following torrential rain, which affected the province on Saturday, January 11. An estimated 80 houses in the area were also destroyed and several roads flooded.

Associated disruptions, including transportation disruptions, infrastructure damages, and power outages, are likely in the affected areas over the coming days.


Individuals in the affected areas are advised to monitor local weather reports, anticipate transportation disruptions, avoid areas directly affected by flooding, confirm road conditions before setting out, and adhere to instructions issued by local authorities. Avoid walking or driving through floodwaters; 15 cm (6 in) of running water is enough to knock over an adult.
