Protesters are expected to gather on Friday, January 17, for the 48th consecutive week of anti-government protests in Algiers. Several hundred participants have gathered in weeks prior. A high turnout is therefore expected. Associated protests are possible in other urban centers across the country. A heightened security presence and associated disruptions are likely during any protest.

Context

Protests to denounce the current political system have continued despite the election of President Abdelmadjid Tebboune on December 12.
