Hundreds of refugee and migrant protesters demonstrated on Lesbos for the second consecutive day on Tuesday, February 4, to denounce prevailing conditions in migrant camps and the perceived slow speed at which requests for asylum are reviewed. Residents of the island gathered in front of a government building in a separate demonstration on Tuesday to protest the existence of the migrant camps on the island. Both demonstrations were dispersed without incident. Security officials announced that additional guards and riot police would be sent to the island to monitor the ongoing protests over the near term.
A heightened security presence and localized transportation disruptions are to be expected in the vicinity of all demonstrations. Clashes between police and demonstrators cannot be ruled out.
Individuals on Lesbos are advised to monitor the situation, avoid all protests and demonstrations as a precaution, and adhere to all instructions issued by the local authorities.
