The Democratic Choice of Kazakhstan (DVK) opposition movement has called for a demonstration to take place in Nur-Sultan on Saturday, February 22, to protest political and socio-economic issues. Participants will reportedly gather at Youth Palace Zhastar at 14:00 (local time).
A newly formed opposition group, the Democratic Party of Kazakhstan, will hold a demonstration in Almaty on Saturday. Members of the group were originally set to gather in Almaty for a founding congress, but the event was canceled and a rally was scheduled in its place after several of the group's members were detained by law enforcement authorities on their way to the gathering. Supporters will demonstrate in Astana square at 11:00 on Saturday morning.
A heightened security presence and localized transportation and business disruptions are to be expected around both demonstration sites. Unsanctioned demonstrations are illegal in Kazakhstan and may be dispersed by police. Clashes between protesters and security forces cannot be ruled out.
Individuals in Almaty and Nur-Sultan are advised to monitor the situation, avoid all public gatherings and demonstrations as a precaution, anticipate a heightened security presence and localized transportation disruptions, and adhere to all instructions issued by the local authorities.
