Sudan Alerte de sécurité

Police disperse a protest march in Khartoum February 20; additional protests possible in the near term

TIMEFRAME expected from 20/2/2020, 11h00 until 24/2/2020, 10h59 (Africa/Khartoum). COUNTRY/REGION Khartoum

Event

Security forces reportedly dispersed a protest in Khartoum on Thursday, February 20, using tear gas. The protest was reportedly organized by the Sudanese Professionals Association (SPA) - the organization responsible for the April 2019 mass protests that led to president Omar al-Bashir's downfall - to call for the reinstatement of soldiers forced into retirement for offering support for the 2019 revolution.

Participants blocked roads with burning tires, leading to traffic disruptions in the area.

A heightened security presence has been reported in the area. Lingering transportation disruptions are possible. Further protests are likely over the near term.

Further protests are likely in Khartoum in the near future.

Advice

Individuals in Khartoum are advised to exercise caution and maintain a low profile at all times, avoid all protests and demonstrations as a precaution, and obey any instructions issued by the local authorities.
