Police detained more than 40 activists on Sunday, March 1, ahead of unauthorized protests scheduled to take place in Nur-Sultan and Almaty. Protests have broken out across Kazakhstan since Tuesday, February 25, after the death of an anti-government activist in a detention center.

Further protests are possible in Kazakhstan over the near term. A heightened security presence and localized transportation disruptions are to be expected in the vicinity of any demonstration.
