A terror attack in Tunis left one security officer dead and five others injured on Friday, March 6. Those injured include four police officers and one civilian. The attack was carried out by two suicide bombers on a motorcycle and targeted a security outpost just nearby the US Embassy. As of Monday, March 9, no group has claimed responsibility for the attack.

A heightened security presence may remain in place over the coming days. Further attacks cannot be ruled out.

Tunis has been targeted by several suicide bombings, including in November 2018, and in June and July 2019. Tunisia has been under a near-constant state of emergency since June 2015. Although briefly lifted in October 2015, it was reinstated following the November 2015 bus bombing that killed a dozen security guards in downtown Tunis. The ongoing state of emergency is now effective through April 29, 2020.

Individuals in Tunis are advised to remain vigilant, expect a heightened security presence, report suspicious objects and behavior to the police, and adhere to instructions issued by local authorities.
