Event

Salt Lake City Airport (SLC) in Utah state resumed flight operations at approximately 15:53 (local time) on Wednesday, March 18, following a 5.7-magnitude earthquake earlier in the day. The airport tower, terminal, and concourses were evacuated after the quake hit the area at around 07:00. Associated disruptions, including flight delays, are possible at SLC through the rest of Wednesday.

Multiple aftershocks were reported following the initial earthquake, which caused minor damages to buildings in the greater Salt Lake City area. Around 70,000 residents lost power due to the quake, but service has been restored to almost all customers as of Wednesday afternoon. Several buildings in Salt Lake City and the surrounding areas were evacuated in the immediate aftermath; however, no serious damage or injuries have been reported and the situation has normalized.

Further aftershocks are possible in the affected area over the coming hours and days.

Advice

Potentially impacted travelers are advised to monitor the situation and confirm flight reservations.

Individuals in the affected areas are advised to monitor the situation, prepare for potential aftershocks, and adhere to all instructions issued by the local authorities.

In the event of aftershocks, individuals are advised to protect themselves as much as possible from falling debris if indoors (e.g. under a table), move away from windows, and not attempt to leave a building unless there is an immediate danger. If outdoors, move away from tall buildings, utility wires, and streetlights.
