On Thursday, March 26, two rounds of indirect fire (IDF) impacted Baghdad's Green Zone. The incident took place at 03:40 (local time). Subsequent reports indicated that one round impacted in the area of the Victory Arch (Crossed Swords) parade ground, 1 km (0.6 mi) north of the US Embassy, a second round was reported to have impacted in the area of Union III, 300 m (0.2 mi) north of the US Embassy. The launch point for the IDF has preliminarily been reported as east Baghdad, though this currently remains unconfirmed.
No fatalities were immediately reported, and no group has taken responsibility for the incident.
A heightened security presence and localized traffic disruptions are to be expected in Baghdad over the coming hours. Retaliatory attacks on Iran-backed Shi'a militia groups are possible over the coming days.
On March 11, approximately 18 rockets were fired into the Al-Taji airbase, killing two Americans and one British national. Another 14 people were wounded in the attack. Another attack took place on March 17, in the vicinity of Jadriyah (Baghdad). No casualties were reported.
Individuals in the affected areas of Iraq are advised to keep abreast of the situation, remain vigilant for militant activity, seek shelter in the event of further rocket attacks, and adhere to all instructions issued by the local authorities and their home governments.
