According to reports on Saturday, April 11, a maximum-security prison in Angarsk (Irkutsk Oblast) was set ablaze after a large-scale riot among inmates and security guards erupted late Friday evening (local time). Officials stated that the blaze had covered some 320,000 square feet (30,000 square meters) before being brought under control. There are reports of casualties, although their number is unclear as of April 11. The riots were reported to have begun after an inmate was beaten by a security officer.

An investigation into the incident has begun.
