Event

Government of National Accord (GNA) forces launched a large-scale offensive on the Libyan National Army (LNA)- controlled Tarhunah (Murqub district) on Saturday, 18 April. Tarhouna is located about 65 km (45 miles) southeast of the capital Tripoli, and clashes were reported in the area of al-Hawatim, among other localities. Dozens of LNA fighters were reportedly captured in the offensive, and military equipment was also seized. A casualty figure has not yet been released. Context

The Libyan National Army (LNA) launched an offensive on Tripoli on April 4, 2019, and prompted evacuations of foreigners from Tripoli on April 7, 2019. LNA and Government of National Accord (GNA) airstrikes have been sporadically reported since April 8, 2019. The bulk of recent fighting has been concentrated in the southern suburbs of the capital.

Advice

Individuals in the area are advised to monitor the situation, avoid areas affected by fighting, maintain safe and current evacuation plans, and adhere to instructions issued by local authorities and their home governments.

The security environment in Libya remains complex. Although travel is possible in some areas (with appropriate security protocols in place), other areas should be considered strictly off-limits. Professional security advice and support should be sought prior to travel.
