Hundreds of protesters agitated by the arrest of a local official stormed the grounds of the courthouse in Jinja (Eastern region) on Saturday, April 25. Resident District Commissioner (RDC) of Jinja, Eric Sakwa, was arrested on charges of manslaughter, robbery, and malicious damage to property on Friday, April 24. The charges follow complaints by some residents of abuses of power exercised by Sakwa and those acting on his orders while carrying out the enforcement of presidential directives to tackle the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic. Sakwa's arrest has polarised opinion amongst local residents, and his supporters gathered outside Jinja Court on Saturday to demand his release. Security forces were deployed to the vicinity but there were no clashes or arrests reported.
A heightened security presence is expected in Jinja over the near term and further protests are possible in the coming days.
Individuals in the affected area are advised to exercise caution and maintain a low profile at all times, avoid all protests and demonstrations as a precaution, and obey any instructions issued by the local authorities.
