At least 89 bandits were killed in a joint Nigerian-Niger security forces operation in Zurmi local government area (Zamfara state) on Friday, April 24. Five people who had been kidnapped were also rescued in the operation, and 322 cattle, 77 motorbikes, and munitions were recovered in the raid.
Further security operations and armed banditry are possible in Zamfara state in the near term.
In recent years, Zamfara state has faced problems with armed groups stealing cattle, kidnapping for ransom, and attacking communities, causing some locals in the state to form vigilante gangs. There has also been an increase in informal mining in the mineral-rich region, attracting outsiders and further fueling instability.
Individuals in Zamfara state are advised to monitor developments to the situation, remain vigilant for militant activity, and adhere to all instructions issued by the local authorities and their home governments.
The security environment in Nigeria remains complex. Professional security advice and support should be sought prior to travel.
