Event

A group of demonstrators gathered at the Mulongwe bridge in Uvira (South Kivu province) on Thursday, April 30, to protest the government's handling of disaster relief funding, which has been allocated by the central and provincial governments following recent flooding in the province. According to reports, the demonstrators demanded transparency and responsibility from the government in the management of the funds that have been allocated to dredge the overflown rivers, rebuild damaged housing and infrastructure, provide food to victims and the displaced, and pay for the funerals of victims. 

Further associated demonstrations are possible in the area over the near term.

Context

Flooding due to heavy rain in South Kivu province resulted in at least 52 fatalities between Friday, April 17, and Thursday, April 23. The Mulongwe and Kivimvira rivers overflowed into entire neighbourhoods in Uvira, resulting in 36 fatalities with an additional 16 deaths confirmed in the city's outskirts. According to the UN, more than 77,000 people have been displaced in eastern DRC as a result of the rains, ongoing in the region since early April.

Individuals in South Kivu province are advised to avoid all protests and demonstrations as a precaution and obey any instructions issued by the local authorities.
