Uganda: Thousands displaced due to rising water levels of Lake Victoria May 2

Uganda Alerte de sécurité

At least 7000 people displaced amid rising water levels of Lake Victoria due to heavy rain as of May 2; further flooding to be expected over the near term

TIMEFRAME expected from 4/5/2020, 12h00 until 10/5/2020, 11h59 (Africa/Kampala). COUNTRY/REGION Uganda

As of Saturday, May 2, at least 7000 people have been displaced by the rising water levels of Lake Victoria caused by heavy rains that have been occurring since February. Among the worst affected areas is Masolya Island in Mayuge district, where 3800 people have been evacuated. Rising water levels have also destroyed properties and displaced residents on the Ugandan shore of the lake. In Rubanda district, two children have been killed by the flooding, which has destroyed houses and washed away roads within the district. Waters have risen to 13.2 m (43 ft) ashore, the highest recorded level since 1964.

Additional flooding, landslides, and disruptions to transportation and business are to be expected in areas affected by heavy rainfall over the near term.

Individuals in Uganda are advised to monitor local weather reports, avoid flooding- and landslide-affected areas, and adhere to all instructions issued by the local authorities (e.g. evacuation orders).
