Mathare residents march to Muthaiga police station in protest of alleged police killing on May 4; heightened security measures and localized transportation disruptions expected

TIMEFRAME expected from 4/5/2020, 12h00 until 10/5/2020, 11h59 (Africa/Nairobi). COUNTRY/REGION Mathare, Muthaiga

A group of residents from Mathare, Nairobi, reportedly marched to Muthaiga Police Station on Monday, May 4, to protest the death of a man who they claim was assaulted and killed by police officers. According to reports, the residents alleged that the officers attacked the man at around 19:30 (local time) on Sunday, May 3, for disregarding an ongoing curfew imposed due to the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) and left his body behind. Locals protested by bringing his body to Muthaiga Police Station on a handcart. Local media reports indicate that the protests slowed down traffic along Thika Road. Further protests are possible in the coming days.

A heightened security presence and associated transportation disruptions are to be expected in the area over the near term.

Individuals in Nairobi are advised to monitor developments to the situation, avoid all protests as a precaution, and obey all instructions issued by local authorities.
