Heavy rains in recent days caused significant flooding in Busia and Kasese districts on Thursday, May 7. Thousands of residents in Busia were forced to evacuate their homes, particularly around Lake Victoria and along the Malaba River. The Busia-Tororo Road was also partially cut off by the flood waters. In Kasese district, communities along the Nyamwamba, Mubuku, and Nyamugasani rivers were also impacted by flooding. Roads throughout the district have been inundated and thousands of people were forced to evacuate low-lying areas. Power outages were reported in Kilembe and it is unclear when service will be restored.
The Uganda National Meteorological Authority (UNMA) is forecasting additional rain across the country in the coming days. Further flooding and associated transportation and power disruptions are possible.
Individuals in the affected areas are advised to monitor local weather reports, avoid areas directly affected by flooding, confirm road conditions, anticipate transportation and business disruptions, and adhere to instructions issued by local authorities. Avoid walking or driving through floodwaters; 15 cm (6 in) of running water is enough to knock over an adult.
