Violent protests broke out in Kayes (Kayes cercle, Kayes region) on Monday evening (local time), May 11, which continued into Tuesday, May 12. The shooting and killing of a teenager by an off-duty police officer in the city reportedly sparked the protests. Overnight on May 11-12, angry youths reportedly attacked a police station and stole weapons. Unconfirmed reports suggest that at least ten people have been killed in the violence.

Further violent unrest is possible in Kayes over the near term.

Kayes has been volatile in recent weeks due to protests against a curfew that was introduced due to coronavirus disease (COVID-19) and demonstrations over a disputed parliamentary election.
