Montenegrin police used tear gas and stun grenades to disperse dozens of protesters who had gathered in Niksic and Pljevla on Wednesday, May 13, to demand the release of eight Serbian Orthodox Church priests. The priests were detained on Tuesday, May 12, after organizing a large religious procession in Niksic, despite the ongoing ban against large gatherings due to coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic.
Further protests are possible in the coming days.
Individuals in the abovementioned areas are advised to monitor developments, avoid all protests and demonstrations as a precaution, and anticipate a heightened security presence and localized disruptions to business and transportation around protest sites.
