Police officers fire tear gas at motorcycle taxi drivers protesting COVID-19 measures in Mbandaka (Équateur province) on May 13; further protest possible in coming days

Police forces deployed tear gas to disperse approximately 100 motorcycle taxi drivers demonstrating in downtown Mbandaka (Équateur province) on Wednesday, May 13. The drivers were protesting police enforcement of restriction measures imposed due to the coronavirus disease (COVID-19). According to reports, the demonstrators began their protest in Mbandaka II, before moving to Bonsomi Avenue. No injuries were reported, and several protesters were arrested.

Further demonstrations are possible in the coming days.


Individuals in Mbandaka are advised to monitor developments to the situation, avoid all protests as a precaution, and obey all instructions issued by local authorities.
