Afghanistan Alerte de sécurité

Civilians killed in Taliban SVBIED attack on military court in Gardez (Paktia province) on May 14; further attacks likely over the near term

TIMEFRAME expected from 14/5/2020, 9h00 until 17/5/2020, 11h59 (Asia/Kabul). COUNTRY/REGION Gardez

At least five civilians were killed in the morning (local time) of Thursday, May 14, in a suicide vehicle-borne improvised explosive device (SVBIED) attack on a military court in the eastern city of Gardez (Paktia province). A further 19 people, including five security forces personnel, were wounded in the blast when the truck-based SVBIED was detonated short of its intended target at around 08:30, although officials suggested that the number of casualties is likely to rise. The Taliban has claimed responsibility for the attack.

Further Taliban attacks targeting security personnel are likely over the near term.

Taliban and Islamic State (IS) militants launch attacks on government personnel, security forces, and civilians in Afghanistan on a near-daily basis. Such assaults are, in part, intended to undermine the perceived capacity of the Afghan National Security Forces (ANSF) - and the Afghan government more broadly - to adequately provide security in the wake of the withdrawal of most US-led NATO forces from the country.

Individuals in Afghanistan are advised to avoid the affected area, remain vigilant for militant activity, and adhere to all instructions issued by local authorities and their home governments.

The security environment in Afghanistan remains complex. Professional security advice and support should be sought prior to travel.
