Cyclone Amphan continues to strengthen as it moves north-northwest through the Bay of Bengal on Sunday, May 17. As of Sunday morning (local time), the India Meteorological Department (IMD) is forecasting that Amphan will intensify into a Severe Cyclonic Storm later in the day and possibly into a Very Severe Cyclonic Storm by Monday, May 18. Coastal Odisha state is expected to receive moderate rainfall, with heavy rain in isolated areas, starting Monday evening and through Wednesday, May 20. West Bengal state is forecast to be hit by heavy rains on Wednesday, along with strong winds gusting up to 95 kph (59 mph).
Associated flooding, landslides, and transportation and business disruptions are anticipated in Odisha and West Bengal states, as well as disruptions to power and communication services in the coming days.
Individuals in the affected areas are advised to monitor local weather reports, adhere to instructions issued by local authorities, anticipate adverse weather and power and transportation disruptions, and remember that running water can be dangerous - 15 cm (6 in) is enough to knock over an adult.
