Security forces in Bahawalpur district (Punjab province) conducted a raid on a militant hideout and killed four militants reportedly affiliated to the Islamic State (IS) militant group on Saturday night (local time), May 16.
The Punjab Police's Counter-Terrorism Department (CTD) conducted an operation alongside local intelligence agencies. The security forces reportedly received intelligence of seven IS militants hiding in Zakhira Jungle area near Azam Chowk in Bahawalpur. Local officials stated the militants were affiliated to Lashkar-e-Jhangvi (LeJ) and later joined Daesh (IS). They had reportedly been tasked to attack places of worship in Bahawalpur district. According to reports, an exchange of fire took place between the CTD officials and the militants and three militants escaped. A large amount of ammunition and weaponry were recovered in the operation and security forces have reportedly begun search operations for the escaped militants in the area.
