United States of America Alerte de sécurité

State governor declares an emergency for Midland county (Michigan state) and orders thousands to evacuate following breaches at two dams on May 19; follow authority directives

TIMEFRAME expected from 20/5/2020, 12h00 until 23/5/2020, 11h59 (America/Detroit). COUNTRY/REGION Midland county (Michigan state)

Event

Michigan state governor Gretchen Whitmer declared an emergency for Midland county on Tuesday, May 19, after two dams collapsed due to heavy rain. Authorities have issued evacuation notices for around 3500 homes and 10,000 people due to the fears of flooding following the breaches. Heavy rain over the past few days caused the Edenville and Sanford dams to collapse and residents have been advised to seek higher ground as far as possible from the Tittabawassee river. Whitmer warned that in the coming hours downtown Midland could be under 3 m (9 ft) of water.

Significant flooding and associated transport disruption are expected in the coming hours.

Advice

Individuals in the affected areas are advised to monitor the situation, anticipate transportation disruptions, avoid areas directly affected by flooding, confirm road conditions before setting out, and adhere to instructions issued by authorities. Avoid walking or driving through floodwaters; 15 cm (6 in) of running water is enough to knock over an adult.
