On Saturday, May 23, demonstrations took place in Kolkata (West Bengal) in protest at the government's allegedly inadequate response to Cyclone Amphan. Police reported that up to 5000 people joined protests in multiple locations in the city. West Bengal suffered extensive damage during the passing of Cyclone Amphan, with infrastructure and homes having been destroyed across coastal regions of the state. Many areas remain flooded, with roads blocked, and electricity yet to be restored. At least 86 people are known to have died in India as a result of the cyclone.
Further protests are likely in the medium term and associated disruption to transport should be expected.
Individuals in Kolkata are advised to monitor developments, avoid all protests and demonstrations as a precaution, and anticipate a heightened security presence and localized disruptions to transportation and business around protest sites.
