Protesters gathered in several areas of Goma (North Kivu province) on Monday, May 25, to denounce the depreciation of the Congolese franc, along with the rising cost of living. Demonstrators gathered in Majengo and Katoyi in the north of the city and Katindo in the west, and erected road blocks. Security forces intervened and dispersed crowds using tear gas and reports indicate live ammunition warning shots were also fired. No injuries were reported as of Monday, although two people were arrested in connection with the protests.
Further rallies and disruptions, as well as a heightened security presence, should be anticipated in Goma in the near term.
Individuals in Goma are advised to keep abreast of the situation, avoid all protests as a precaution, anticipate transportation disruptions near demonstration sites, and adhere to instructions issued by local authorities.
