Suspected Allied Democratic Forces' (ADF) militants killed at least 40 people in two attacks in Irumu territory (Ituri province) on Monday, May 25, and Tuesday, May 26. Reports indicate that 14 civilians were killed in Samboko village on Monday evening (local time), and a further 26 civilians were killed in a separate attack on the village of Tikamaibo on Tuesday morning. It is feared that the death toll could be higher. The ADF are yet to comment on the attacks.
Also on Monday, reports indicate that 17 civilians were killed in another attack perpetrated by suspected ADF militants in Makutano village in Irumu territory (Ituri province).
A heightened security presence should be anticipated in the area. Similar attacks are possible in the region over the near term.
The government's limited presence in the DRC's eastern provinces, as well as the presence of numerous armed groups and local self-defense militias, has led to continued insecurity in the region.
Individuals in Ituri province are advised to remain vigilant for militant activity, monitor developments to the situation, and adhere to all instructions issued by local authorities and their home governments.
